The Sexagenary Cycle and Iljin — How East Asia Names Its Days

Koreans still say things like "this is a byeongo year" or "the iljin is good today." History textbooks are full of the same two-character prefixes: Imjin War, Gabo Reform, Eulsa Treaty. Those two characters are ganji, and the sixty names they form in sequence make up the sexagenary cycle.
The cycle was not invented for divination. It is closer to a numbering system — a way of counting time before numerals were in common use. East Asia gave years, months, days, and two-hour periods names drawn from this rotating set of sixty. This guide explains how the combinations are built, why there are exactly sixty of them, and how an almanac works out the ganji of any given day.
What the Sexagenary Cycle Is
The cycle pairs two sets of characters. The first is the ten Heavenly Stems (cheongan): gap, eul, byeong, jeong, mu, gi, gyeong, sin, im, gye. The second is the twelve Earthly Branches (jiji): ja, chuk, in, myo, jin, sa, o, mi, sin, yu, sul, hae. Stems were said to express the energy of heaven, branches the energy of earth.
The two sets advance together, one step at a time. Gap pairs with ja to give gapja, eul with chuk to give eulchuk, byeong with in to give byeongin, and so on. At the tenth pair, gyeyu, the stems are exhausted and return to gap — but the branches still have sul and hae left. So the eleventh pair is gapsul, and the two sets keep meshing out of phase until both finish together at the sixtieth pair, gyehae, after which gapja comes around again.
These sixty combinations are the yuksipgapja, often shortened to gapja after the first pair. Oracle bone inscriptions from the Shang dynasty already record dates in this system, making it a continuous timekeeping scheme more than three thousand years old.
Why Sixty, Not a Hundred and Twenty
Freely combining ten stems with twelve branches would yield 120 pairs. Only sixty of them actually occur. Mathematically the reason is straightforward: two sets advancing in lockstep return to their starting position at the least common multiple of 10 and 12, which is 60.
The traditional explanation uses yin and yang. Among the stems, the odd-numbered ones — gap, byeong, mu, gyeong, im — are yang, and the even-numbered ones — eul, jeong, gi, sin, gye — are yin. The branches divide the same way: ja, in, jin, o, sin, and sul are yang, while chuk, myo, sa, mi, yu, and hae are yin. Advancing the two sets in order guarantees that a yang stem always meets a yang branch and a yin stem a yin branch.
That is why gapja and eulchuk exist but gapchuk and eulja do not: mixed pairings are never generated in the first place. The arithmetic fact and the yin-yang principle point to exactly the same result, and that agreement is part of what made the system feel so coherent for so long.
The Ten Stems, Their Elements and Colors
Each stem carries a yin-yang polarity and one of the five elements — wood, fire, earth, metal, water — and each element in turn maps to a direction and a color. The stems pair up two by two to share an element, the first of each pair being yang and the second yin: gap and eul are wood, byeong and jeong fire, mu and gi earth, gyeong and sin metal, im and gye water.
This color mapping is where phrases like "year of the Red Horse" or "year of the Golden Pig" come from. 2026 is a byeongo year: byeong is red fire and o is the horse, so it is the Red Horse year. A gyeongo year such as 1990 or 2050 is the White Horse year, since gyeong is white metal. Each such name returns only once every sixty years, which is why it makes the news when it does.

All Sixty Pairs, Grouped Into Six Decades
Memorizing sixty pairs at once is hard, but the structure becomes obvious when you split them into six groups of ten, each beginning with a gap pair. Each group is called a sun (decade): gapja, gapsul, gapsin, gapo, gapjin, and gapin. Every row of the table below is one such decade.
Read the table down the columns and the stems repeat in strict order; read across and you can see the branches shifting two places with each new row. In every decade, two of the twelve branches go unused — traditional practice calls those two the "empty" branches of that decade. In the gapja decade, for instance, sul and hae never appear.

Four Layers — Year, Month, Day, and Hour
The real power of the cycle is that it labels several layers of time at once. The ganji of a year is the secha, of a month the wolgeon, of a day the iljin, and of a two-hour period the siju. These four layers are exactly the four pillars of saju, and since each pillar has two characters, they add up to eight — the palja, or "eight characters."
Each layer advances by its own rule. The year pillar steps forward once a year at Ipchun; the month pillar steps at each of the twelve jeol solar terms; the day pillar steps at midnight; and the hour pillar steps every two hours. Two people born on the same date but at different hours therefore have different hour pillars.
What makes the system cohere is that higher layers constrain the stems of lower ones. The stem of the first hour of the day is determined by the stem of that day, and the stem of the first month is determined by the stem of that year. The four layers are not four independent counters but one interlocking mechanism.
How a Day's Ganji Is Actually Computed
Year and month ganji can be derived fairly directly from the calendar year and the solar terms. The day is different. A day's ganji advances by exactly one step per day and is unaffected by month lengths, leap years, or even calendar reforms. There is no shortcut formula — you can only fix the ganji of one known day and count from there.
Every almanac therefore rests on an anchor date. With one date pinned, you can count the number of days between it and any target date and take the remainder modulo 60. To count those days without error, it helps to convert calendar dates into a continuous serial number the way astronomers do with the Julian Day Number, since subtracting dates directly from a calendar with uneven months and leap days invites mistakes.

History Named by the Cycle
Before numbered eras became standard, East Asians named events after the ganji of the year. Much of Korean history keeps those names. The Imjin War of 1592 took place in an imjin year; the renewed invasion of 1597 in a jeongyu year. The Manchu invasion of 1636 was the byeongja war, the coup of 1884 the gapsin coup, and the reforms of 1894 the gabo reforms.
Modern history follows the same pattern: the Eulsa Treaty of 1905, the gyeongsul national humiliation of 1910, and the gimi Declaration of Independence of 1919. The March First Movement is still called the gimi year movement for this reason. Within any sixty-year window the ganji name identifies a year uniquely, which was precise enough for contemporaries.
The catch is that the same name returns every sixty years. There was an imjin year in 1592, but also in 1652 and 1712. Careful historical writing therefore pairs the ganji name with the Gregorian year.
Hwangap and the Cycle Today
When the ganji of your birth year comes around again after sixty years, the occasion is called hwangap — literally "the return of gapja." In an era of shorter life expectancy, living to meet your own year sign again was a genuine milestone, and the hwangap feast became one of the great rites of passage. Celebrations are more modest now that people live longer, but sixty is still felt as a turning point in Korean life.
The cycle surfaces most visibly at New Year, when the coming year's ganji, color, and animal appear in news coverage and seasonal design. It also persists in the names of cultural properties, in dates written in classical documents, and in ancestral rite texts. The small characters printed beneath the date on a Korean calendar are usually that day's iljin.
Saying that a day has a "good iljin" comes from the traditional practice of choosing auspicious dates. There is no scientific evidence that a particular ganji affects what happens on that day. The sexagenary cycle is worth appreciating as a remarkably durable notation for time — over three millennia without a break — while the fortune readings attached to it are best enjoyed as culture and entertainment.
